ICF Vancouver Island (Insulated Concrete Forms)
Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) are intended for energy-efficient, cast-in-place reinforced-concrete walls on Vancouver Island.
ICF's are usually in the form of plastic blocks foamed and separated by plastic or carbon-fibre spacers that lock.
They create a mould for walls of a building structure. Concrete is dumped to form the structure of the walls. Reinforcing steel is often added before placing the concrete walls for flexural strength. This is also the case with bridges and high-rise buildings made of concrete.
Once the concrete has cured, the forms are kept in place permanently to serve as Thermal and acoustic insulation, Space to run electrical conduit and plumbing, and Backing for gypsum boards on the interior and stucco, brick, or other siding on the exterior.
The Benefits of this method has several advantages compared to traditional building materials, especially in residential and light commercial construction on Vancouver Island.
Minimal air leaks for comfort, less heat loss, superior energy performance, Lower energy bills, Fast construction, high sound absorption for Peace and quiet inside.
There is also little waste from local materials, long life-cycle which leads to environmental friendliness. The integrity is time tested and resists forces of nature. This also leads to higher resale values.
Other benefits include flame-retardant EPS. The expanded polystyrene (EPS) will only burn while a flame is applied directly to the foam; the resulting smoke from burning EPS is said to be "less toxic" than wood smoke.
